This work was composed in the Baroque Era 1600 - 1750
The Baroque Era was when the first orchestra's were put together. Back then it was called an ensemble
An ensemble is a small group of instruments.
There was no conductor to conduct the ensemble, instead the solo instrument would lead the ensemble
The word Baroque means - Highly decorated Jewel
Words that describe the Baroque Era:
- Stately
- Grand
- Decorative
Harpsichord - used as a main keyboard instrument
Figured Bass - numbers written underneath the music to tell players what chords to play
Small ensembles of instruments
Polyphonic texture - two or more melodies playing at the same time - Imitation is an example of this.
Dynamics - not a lot of dynamics or expression used
Contrasting sections - fast slow fast

The Form ( structure) of the work is a suite (sweet)
A suite is a collection of Dances
Each dance would be in Binary or Ternary form
Binary - 2 sections [A] [B]

This suite has 5 dances

2. Hornpipe
3. Minuet
4. Lentement
5. Bouree
For our Junior cert we only need to learn about 2 of these dances;
